Abandoning Clarisonic

I worked in the cosmetic industry for nearly 3 years.When Clarisonic was launched, it was all the rage. I used a discount to get one for myself- the Mia. I started using it, and I liked it, I thought. It was important that I liked it, because the industry was pushing this product. Every retailer was trying to sell more than the others, there were contests, there were prizes. I tried different brush heads, but it never got rid of all my acne. In fact, some of the brush heads worsened my acne, and I ended up with cystic acne. I upgraded my Clarisonic, I tried everything, but the only thing that worked? I could only use it 2 times a week. Most people were using it 2 times a day. It improved my skin, only slightly. 

About a year ago, I heard about this new product, the Foreo Luna. I researched the product- no brush, poreless silicone, 5 month battery life- and it seemed too good to be true. It was definitely popular in Great Britain. Then it started appearing in Sephora. I continued to think about it, read more reviews, and consider investing. 

I decided to invest in the product, knowing if it affected my skin in a negative way that Sephora has a great return policy. I have used it exactly twice. My skin has never felt this good. It is smooth, even toned, and all of my products absorb immediately. I like that it's completely hygienic, no additional costs for brushes, can be used in the shower, and it's fairly priced at 139 for the mini. 

Basically, I do not regret this decision at all. If you're considering Clarisonic at all, or want to step up skin care, I'd definitely recommend this product. Just not the Luxe one (who needs a gold or platinum base for $6500)

An Argument for Comfort and Fashion

First and foremost I want to respond to someone who asked if I was only going to invest in one beauty product what would it be? For me? Skincare, mascara and foundation. All Chanel, all the time. But ask what is the most important part to your makeup. If your skin looks great it'll just be mascara.

Secondly, I am still working on living on a budget. This will make its way into this piece.

But tonight I want to talk about the 90's. If you're not aware, it's making it's comback starting in fall of 2013, so get on the train. I think when people think of the 90's right now they're forgetting things. It wasn't all crop tops and baggy jeans for fashion (you can all praise Marc Jacobs for that- he lost a job at Perry Ellis over grunge, but it worked out in the end). It was about comfort for the sake of fashion. Doc Martins were still cool, but flow-y maxi dresses; long hippy hair; plaid... it was all cool. And fortunately we are skipping past the hideous transition from the 80's to the 90's and skipping right to grunge or Clueless. And I think that the way to modernize the 90's is to combine the two. Comfort and fashion? In the 90's they were both about making a statement- combining I-don't-give-a-shit attitude with the I'm-the-elite attitude is the future of these trends, what would have happened if Cher Horowitz had been able to be friends with that cute skater boy played by Brecken Meyer (also what was his name in that movie?)

So tonight I present my argument in the name of comfort and fashion... My desire for trendy Birkenstocks.

And yes. I screen shot that off my iPad. Adorable, comfy, platform sandals. Trendy? Yes. Overpriced? Not really. And honestly, every company is making their own version of it. So I found the ones for me. Target is doing a gladiator interpretation for about $33. Steve Madden did cow fur/skin ones. Marc Jacobs has his version, and you can't go a page on Nordstrom without seeing some version of the shoe, half of which are produced by Top Shop- the kingdom of trend. Next year they'll be at Forever21, and all over everywhere. But this year? I'm challenging myself to try new trends, seek more fashion, and, as always, if it's good enough for Vogue, it's good enough for me. 

Budgeting; or a Guide to Fabulous Adulting

For the majority of my adult life I've been told that eventually everyone you know gets married and starts a family. I am at this point in my life. It seems like LITERALLY everyone I know is having getting married or having babies or both. And all the while I'm off in single land, enjoying spending my money on $35 lipstick and buying all the shoes.

As far as I can tell, marriage changes all the expenses. Maybe it's not marriage, it may actually be buying a home. But either way, at some point priorities change. Husbands, wives, houses, babies, but at some point stiletto pumps and the perfect mascara fall to the end of the list. So, I've been thinking about all of my friends, my new moms and new home-owning friends, and everyone who is trying to be fabulous for less.

So for you lovelies, I'll be taking a look into how to work on a budget, trendy bags, cute shoes, perfect lipstick, great hair products all on a serious budget. So, as a series for my ladies, I'll be putting together budgeted items and where to get them.

To start, makeup, for the lady on the go:

I follow the Jeremy Renner guide to quick makeup: lips, lashes, brows. I can't live without some kind of foundation too. But for a lady on a budget, here's a plethora of low-cost items to help.

In terms of drugstore brands, I love Maybelline for many of my products.

Mascara:

I love all three of these, but my favorite is Colossal Volume in waterproof. It's great for a day where you're not going to have a lot of mirror time. These run around $5.00 at Target or Walmart. I would recommend a lash primer with them as well, but they work alone as well.

If you don't love Maybelline, this Loreal mascara is amazing.

It runs around $10.00 at Target or Walmart.

I'd recommend the Maybelline 24 Color Tattoo in terms of shadow. There's a lot color options, and they apply easily with your ring finger. If you're really low maintenance, pick a neutral color, you just need one color.

These run between $4.00 and $6.00 at drugstores.

For your brows, a matte shadow goes a LONG way. You can also use this as a smudgy eyeliner.

Revlon's matte shadow works like a dream with an angled brush to fill in brows. Maybelline has a brow powder around $5.00 at Walmart, and the eyeshadows run between $3.00-$6.00. 

I also recommend an eyeliner, just to line your top waterline. Rimmel has a good eyeliner, and it smudges less than most drugstore brands (Please note: I struggle to recommend here. I swear by Chanel and Marc Jacobs liners. They don't smudge and last forever.) 

These run around $4.00. I like the lighter colors, browns, and the beige is always a great selection to highlight the lashes. 

In terms of lipsticks, there are 2 I recommend. I am currently OBSESSED with Flower from Drew Barrymore. It's only available at Walmart. I got Desert Rose. It runs about $7.00 

The best part about it is the texture isn't grainy or sticky. 

But for something longer wearing, Loreal Infallible Lip Stain is fantastic. 

These run around $10.00. they do last all day, but I'd recommend only using them a couple of times a week because they are fairly drying. 

These products alone will give you a nice, clean fabulous look. Add a foundation or tinted moisturizer- Maybelline's Fit Me foundation is good, but is a bit oily, Maybelline's Dream BB Cream is great, and I would definitely try any of the Flower products, especially the Tinted Moisturizer; a Physician's Formula bronzer and you're set for the day. But just for the recommended products, even if you buy the most expensive you're looking at less than $40 before tax. And the lip products, brow, eye shadow, and liner will last at least 6 months. So, realistically, that's less than $10 a month. 

I don't ever want anyone to think that I don't respect people who are married with kids at my age. I have so much respect for that, and trust me, I think you should be every bit as fabulous as everyone else in my world. 

Spring Needs- non clothing

I'll come back and tell you all about what happened with Nordstrom, but I found the dress and some amazing clothes.

This spring, though I think there's a lot being overlooked. There are certain things that every woman needs to have, especially in that transition from winter to summer. Spring is always a good time for rebirth and reinvention. So it's always a good time to revisit what you need to get you through the summer.

First thing you need: Sunglasses.

For sunglasses, I have one recommendation. Find one pair you love, show them to 3 different people, invest in them, and take care of them. Then spend $14-16 on cheap, trendy pairs at Target and Forever 21. For me, I cannot live without my Marc by Marc Jacobs cat eyes. I spent $75  on them, and I love them. I also can't live without my heart-shaped skull glasses. But get ones that work for you. I always recommend Ray Bans. If you want the best aviators check out Michael Kors and Tom Ford. And if you prefer oversized Jackie O. glasses, look at Chanel and Tory Burch. But remember classics are the ones to invest in. If you want something with a lot of color or super on trend, definitely check out some lower priced sun glasses. You'll love the classics for longer, and won't feel bad when the cheap ones go into the pool.

The second thing you need: The perfect summer lip.

For me, this year, it's pink. I'm all about pink. For this summer, my big investment was in Pantone's color of the year, Exotic Orchid. I also went with a baby pink from Lancome's Rouge in Love line. I also swear by Secret by Chanel (Rouge Coco Shine), Shiaap by Nars, and Saga by Chanel (again, Rouge Coco Shine). For those who like less color, try Boy from Chanel.

The Third Thing You Need: Fragrance

The best part about spring and summer is moving away from the dark mysterious scents that are perfect for winter. I love my winter scents- Chanel Coco Noir and Chanel Allure Sensuelle- but spring and summer are all about the lighter, airier scents. I personally go to Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere, Marc Jacobs Daisy or Lola, and Calvin Klein's Downtown. I'm also OBSESSED with Bond's I *HEART* NY, but it's a unisex, year-round fragrance. I also recommend Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle and Chance Eau Fraiche or Eau Tendre. If you want something different, check out Gucci's Flora.

The Fourth Thing You Need: Texturizing Hair Product

Nothing says spring and summer like super-texturized waves. I can't say enough about having a great spray to give your hair body and texture. I love the bumble and bumble salt spray, but this year, I'm trying the Not Your Mother's texturizing salt spray. Don't forget to make sure you use an oil to add moisture back into the hair.

The Fifth Thing You Need: Bronzer

I know I'm ready for summer when I bust out the bronzer. It can give glow, add color, and provide a summer glow depending on how you use it, and which products you use. Personally, I swear by Chanel Les Beige and Chanel Soliel Tan de Chanel's Sunkissed and gel bronzer. Depending on the look you are going for Estee Lauder's summer bronzer's are always great and add shimmer. I also recommend Dior Nude, and Physician's Formula for a drug store brand. If you're looking for an all-over body bronzer, check out St. Tropez's mousse or Lancome's leg. Those are great self tanners that are easy to apply and are never orange.

The 6th Thing You Need: Lipbalm/Chapstick

It's spring. You're outside. It's warming up and the wind is blowing and your lips? They're feeling dry. Like you haven't had water in months. Yeah, it's so important to have something to keep your lips feeling good. I have Marc Jacobs Lip Lock Moisture Balm. It's minty and cooling, but thick and moisturizing. I also always have at least one Baby Lips tinted balm with me. I am loving the new extra strength colors for spring, especially in coral.

The Seventh Thing You Need: Perfect Ballet Flats

I'm always feeling Bridget Bardot. Always. But in the spring, nothing feels more natural than a cobble stone street, a vespa, and the perfect, comfortable ballet flats. Steve Madden is making them in so many colors, but if you want cheap, trendy ones, again I suggest Target, Forever 21, or H&M. They're easy to wear on a spring walk, but they're great for brunch, dates, leisurely bike rides, and ice cream dates. Okay, no one goes on ice cream dates, BUT IF I DID I WOULD WEAR THESE SHOES! (The color is called carnation. It goes great with emerald.) 

The Eighth Thing You Need: A Camera

I'm watching all of my friends get older and yet, spring is when we are all out doing fun things. Whether it is travelling the California coast on your honeymoon or celebrating the newest edition to your family- either the new baby or new dog- we are all creating memories. I feel like we are all so much on the go and we always are using the cameras on our phones. Don't forget to print some out, keep, and have to look at. Personally, I invested in an instant camera. I will never print out pictures, so this will be some fun to have for the next few years.

The Nordstrom Stylist pt.2/What to Wear to a Wedding

So, I reached out to Nordstrom again. This time I got 2 replies, one within 24 hours, one a few days later. So I set up an appointment with a woman named Krista and I have the appointment tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it, if I feel a connection I think I'll actually have her help me find a dress for a wedding I'm going to at the end of March.

But more importantly, I'm fixated on what to wear to the wedding. My friend, who knows me very well, told me, "It's no big deal, wear whatever, it's not black tie." GREAAAAAAAAAAAAAT. That leaves the door open. And please don't get me wrong, she knows I won't show up in boyfriend jeans and a tank top, She knows me well enough to know I would show up looking good, but this is a moment to wear something fun. Of course, I'm digging through the internet looking for what one should wear to a wedding. I have a zillion dresses, of course, but I'm still torn on what to wear. Part of me wants a cool jumpsuit to wear. Part of me wants a fun, tea length party dress. Of course I could wear a sexy cocktail dress- boooooring, but if I paired it with a cool oversized cardigan and funky jewelry that would be fun. I have this great Calvin Klein dress that I'm worried would be too short, but opaque tights solve problems.

So, right now I'm researching, and I feel like there's no answer. It's the most ambiguous event I've ever attended. You see, I've missed every wedding since graduating college. I am committed to career and I've chosen work over weddings every time (all my weddings have been travel weddings. I was often told no I couldn't go.)

Of course I'm wondering if  a jumpsuit would be appropriate- I always want to wear a jumpsuit. I could class-up something like this by removing the belt and adding a better one, adding jewelry.

But then part of me wonders about a classic party dress, easy, and minimal accessorizing needed- it's hard to travel with accessories. Maybe something like this in a different color. 

The sexy dress/cardigan idea is something I am keeping in mind and toying with, but it would be something I need to work on conceiving in my head. But it may end up being something completely different. I guess only time will tell- though I don't have a lot of time.

Nordstrom Personal Stylist

So I know some of you will be surprised to find out I've been doing a lot of ordering from nordstrom.com. Okay no one is surprised to find that out. But I've been ordering, specifically lingerie. I've found a gorgeous British line that fits well and it so pretty- not an easy feat in a 36 G. Not at all. So, I've been visiting their website and ordering, because they don't carry the line in the Denver stores, except minimally. So, I've been getting emails about rating things and what I think, so I've been looking through it quite a bit.

The other day I was going in to rate my newest acquisition, an awesome honey-colored piece (sounds like I need to do a lingerie entry no?), and I saw an opportunity to set up an appointment with a personal stylist. I've always thought I'd be good at that, but I want to see what Nordstrom was offering. So I signed up, asking for an appointment. Very excitedly, I filled in my info, requesting an email response, and it told me I'd here back within 24 hours. So, I've been checking my email every thirty minutes or so for the last 2 days and still... nothing. I'm sad. I'm hoping that I'll hear something still, but I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't hear within the time frame advertised.

But all of this does pose the idea of letting people in to make judgement on style. Part of the thing is I know I will get into a rut. I mean, I would never purchase 4 of the exact same skirt and wear it all the time, never. Only I totally did. I know I'm overly obsessed with finding the perfect oversized cardigan and seeing what's out there. So that's why I'm pretty disappointed... Oh well I guess I can save the $120 I was planning on spending and take myself to a museum this weekend. And also get coffee. And maybe buy everyone in the bar a drink.

Defining and Inspiring Style

Style comes from everywhere. Television, movies, books, history, high fashion, street style, Vogue, art, etc. will serve as inspiration. But what happens when that ends?

I just finished watching the last season of Gossip Girl, aka my style inspirations. It wasn't hard to dig for those perfect styling moments, in fact it was easier to forget some. From Blair's effortless Elie Saab wedding dress to Serena's perfect Diane von Furstenberg at fashion's night out, and everything in between, the show screams fashion. It's so in fashion, one of spring's biggest trends is featured here...

...and it's been off the air since 2012!  The wrap headband is perfect. 

This point tonight is not to rehash my obsession with (what started as a) teenage gossip show, but to question where the next great fashion inspiration comes from for the individual. I can go on and on about Marc Jacobs and how his shows constantly influence my style choices, or how Burberry Prosum's spring 2014 line was like a little bit of heaven for me, but really I think that for most people, individual style comes from more accessible places- television, film, and magazines. 

So, while I can watch The Devil Wears Prada 15,000 times, it is always important to remember to branch out and find those new inspirations. I know for a lot of people American Hustle fits the bill. I think the movie is interesting, but there were fashion moments that transported me right out of the movie- a recent Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress can be seen on Amy Adams, which took a lot of my attention. 

Instead, I've been looking to bloggers and the internet for that inspiration. Carrie Bradshaw will always be  an inspiration, as will the Blair Waldorf, but now it's become more apparent that it's about tangible, real fashion- which is part of the past with current trends, taking back fashion for everyone. Instead of maxing out credit cards, it's maxing out what is in your closet. And I'd like to see that in pop culture. Instead of it being
"real"- movies and tv are rarely realistic- I want to see some real street style put into pop culture. See girls in high waisted pants and flowy shirts or an oversized sweater and leggings. But, I guess for now, we will have Girls and wait for the next network tv show to really nail current trends. 

Hiatus... Beauty... Fashion...

I married a job in 2012. Married it. Made it my entire life. For a year and a half. It exhausted me, made me hate everything about my life, fashion, beauty, and anything that made me happy- outside of food.

But this... this is important. This blog is important. I can make it anything. So, I'm coming back to it, committing to it. It will be an extension of a tumblr account I need to set up. But it will be.

So back to the point... The point is fashion... So my must-haves for early 2014.

1) Pleated maxi skirt.

The pleated maxi is really the quintessential piece to straddle the line between the eccentric 80's inspired fashion of the last few years and the minimalist 90's inspired fashion of 2014 and the next few years. It's soft and flowy, but still irreverent and fun. Dress it up with chunky heels, dress it down with boots, flats, or sandals. Add a casual sweater/sweatshirt and a chunky, sparkly necklace to achieve perfect street style.

2) Oversized sweater

Cozy, minimal, perfect for days off. Add it to leggings and boots and be chic and sophisticated. Throw it over a tank top, crop top, or casual tee and the maxi skirt above and make it cozy, funky, fun. Perfect for the cooler months, hold on to it for winter, spring, and fall.

3) Facial oil

The beauty trend of the season. Add it to my list of products I can't live without: BB/CC cream and the Chanel Les Beiges powder. The Boscia oil is perfect for my combo/oily skin, but provides radiance and hydration thanks to the addition of Camillia extract. It smells heavenly, feels luxurious, and the price point is manageable.

4) Pointy toe Mary Janes

In the words of Carrie Bradshaw "I thought they were an urban shoe myth!" Sexy, stylish yet simple: completely on point.

5) Deep lipstick.

Dark, deep, sexy. The throwback to the early 90's, be brave with the lip. Keep the eye light and simple to avoid looking goth, but be brave!

2013

Hi everyone!

I know, I haven't been around. Please forgive me. Work has me consumed, as well as dating. Or kind of dating. Or whatever. And realistically I have another "Blog" I'm running that I love and takes no work. However, I swear I am trying to be back here more. More commentary on shoes and skin and beauty and clothes...

Oh clothes...

That's the other part of the problem. The growth of fashion and trends is making me sad. Street style doesn't completely suck, but I'm sick of seeing hipster style clothing. I'm sick of that being the defining moment of style right now. I still want to see the high end, pretty girls, not girls who are trying to show they're down to earth using their clothes. It's okay to not have 10,000 patterns going on and 17 layers, with a hat or headband and scarf and long necklace and 14 bracelets and a cross body bag. IT'S NOT CUTE. I'm over it. Calvin Klein needs to usher in minimalism again.

So there's my apology. It's kind of half-assed, isn't it? Are you really surprised?

Shoe Dazzle vs. JustFab pt 2.

I love how everyone finds this blog because I did the compare and contrast with the shoes. So here's the second part.

I can quit Shoe Dazzle any time I want. They don't make me sign up, they're not doing monthly fees any more, and it's easy. I am completely comfortable. Because I don't like most of the shoes they produce and I feel like they look a little... unfinished.

JustFab... Oh trying to leave JustFab... I've tried several times, all unsuccessfully. They still have the monthly fees, and they hide how to skip the month, and it's just a pain. I want to quit. I really do. But here's the thing with that. To quit JustFab, you have to call them. I can never get them on the phone (be it to change sizes on a shoe, ask about an order, or asking to quit), but when I do they're often confused and disoriented. I love the shoes I got from them, except they're too big. The bag I got is ADORABLE, but kind of impractical. I wanted to get a credit for it. Needless to say, months later, I still have the bag. It's fine. I like it.

So this blog is going on a journey. I had a really rough day at work. I am trying to show people that they are in desperate need of Chanel, but they don't seem to believe me. Actually it's a bunch of stuff all having nothing to do with selling. Any way... I needed cheering up. So I was shoe shopping. I need boots, wedge boots. Something funky. But black. So I start my journey all over the internet. Including these 2 sites.

So, this is why I ended up back at DSW. I was looking through these sites, but the heels on their boots were too high for me to stand on at work for 8 hours a day or they were deathly boring. I can't have a boring shoe. I wear all black all day. I wear pencil skirts every day. My shoes are my one chance to own my outfit. So I need function and fashion. I may have paid more for the shoes I got, but I can guarantee that they will fit, that if something is wrong I'll be able to return or exchange them, I don't have to rely on the phone and computer, and I can have what I want.

I think the problem with fashion right now is that we are settling. Instead of buying EXACTLY what we want, we are buying what is cheap. Spend a little more, the shoes will fit and feel better, wear longer, and keep you happy. In the end, you'll spend less, because you're getting what you want (unless we're talking Louboutins. That's a different level.) So, here. What I decided on, instead of spending $40 to be unhappy and uncomfortable in my boots. And no, I don't think I'll be purchasing from the JustFab line again. Maybe ShoeDazzle, definitely the Mint lines, bust JustFab? I'm just over it.

Perfect Skin

To my annoyance, there's a phrase that I've been hearing a lot lately. In spite of my arguments, I hear a lot about how I have "beautiful skin." Now, I know where my blemishes are, and I work really hard to control the oil, so I see my skin very differently. So tonight's entry is all about my personal skin care.

First and foremost, we are our own harshest critic. I know this from working with people on their skin. We know all the lines and wrinkles and spots. I don't think most people see those things that we dislike about our skin. But since each person knows their concerns, I'll share my routine. 

*Author's note: I am off tomorrow. I need to clean my bathroom. The counter has spots from spilling contact solution. Don't judge. 

Every day, I do these things. Not morning and night, but this is my skin care routine. If I skip a day, my skin has a fit and I break out. It's all about the routine. It's important to commit to taking care of your skin. 

Step 1. Makeup removal. 

Probably the last thing I got into, makeup removal is HUGE. Obviously, it helps cleanse the skin of make up, but it also helps prevent clogged pores, dead skin, and aging. I use Almay because it's gentle and offers oil-free options. It's totally price friendly, too. Now, I love the Chanel Demaquillant Yeux eye makeup remover, but I personally prefer wipes. These come pre-soaked in the remover, so I never feel like I'm wasting product. (Obviously) I only use these steps at night. 

Step 2. The Clarisonic

Please note it's charging. This is because I cannot go a wash without it. The Clarisonic is the best part of my day. I love washing my face now that I have this. It literally smooths skin, cleanses better than your hands, cleanser, and wash cloth alone. It's nice, because it's my wind down moment of my day. Even though I use a face makeup remover, this will do it for you (though seeing all the makeup I wear every day come off grosses me out.) 1 minute twice a day and your skin will feel amazing. Here's the bonus: Because skin will be smoother and there will be less dead skin, you will use less product. When I say that, I mean less cleanser, less toner, less foundation, less everything. It's amazing. 

Step 3. Cleansing, toning, and exfolianting

Easy peasy, I exfoliate 3 times a week. Right now I have Neutragena foaming scrub, but I will be switching back to my green tea exfoliater from Saint Ives. That is my favorite exfoliator. Exfoliate 2-4 times a week. Clean up the dead skin. Do not use an exfolaitor with the Clarisonic. Done.

I cleanse at least twice a day using Chanel Mousse Douceur (Doe-cee-ere). It has 2 amazing ingredients which have been refined down to the purest form to create active ingrediants- tulip wood extract (this will help remove free radicals from the skin) and mallow (this helps balance the pH in skin.) It keeps my skin extra soft. 

After my cleanser I use the Chanel Lotion Douceur. This helps keep the oil in control (not alcohol free, but it's so minimal I can't feel it.) It also has the active ingredients that are in the cleanser. 

Step 4. Moisturizing.

The last step in my routine for now. I do not use a concentrate yet, but I will probably start. I'll get to that at another point. 

I use 2 eye creams, because I want 2 results. I use Lancome Genifique eye in the morning, mixed with my concealer. It helps with dark circles and puffiness, but is light enough to pair with a concealer. Then, at night, I use Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair. This is my favorite eye cream. I could live without Genifique, but I doubt I could survive without ANR. It's so light and weightless, yet so powerful. 

I only have one cream for day and night, because I am just looking for first signs of aging. I use Chanel Hydra Beauty Gel Creme (EEE-drah) because it is very hydrating, oil-free, light weight, and it does not break me out. It helps keep my skin hydrated without clogging my pores. No matter how oily your skin is, it is imperative to hydrate. 

Optional- SPF

Okay this isn't optional. Use an SPF. I use Chanel UV Essentiel or Clinique Super City Block. My moisturizer does not have an SPF, and because I'm so very fair, I have to protect from the sun. This is part of what keeps my skin looking healthy and happy. So use that. 

There you are, world. This is how I keep my skin glowing, smooth, and "beautiful." Go try different things. And get a Clarisonic. In fact, call and order it from me.

Working for Chanel

In case you all missed it, I have been MIA for a while now. I accepted a position as a Chanel Cosmetics Counter Manager at a department store. I have also met someone very special, so less blogging time for sure. Mostly because I am working so much, but I need to get back at it. So, I'm going to start blogging more about makeup. It's not that I care less about fashion, but I will admit that I love my job. Makeup is a huge part of fashion, so it's all about that for me. Plus, I am working for Chanel. I mean, come on.

So here's the thing. I keep seeing these "What's in their bag" posts. Which I love. But at the same time, if I dump my bag it's like gloves and name tag and bag of lipsticks and powder. Proof:

This is my work bag. In it, you see my mittens, fingerless so I can keep using my phone, my Michael Kors lipstick bag, Sephora nail polish remover (it's amazing for on the go! There's a sponge soaked in the best remover on the inside, so all you have to do is dip your fingers 2 or 3 times. All the girls at work are obsessed with it), my Starbucks gift card, because I run on coffee, Sephora carbon blotting papers (discontinued, but so amazing), Chanel Le Volume Mascara (not released until November 23rd, but my new addiction), Lancome gloss in Exuberant Rose, Soft Lips chapstick (which I never use. I don't know why it's there), Pepto for when I am super stressed, and my Chanel Poudre Universelle in 20. I have to live out of this bag for work, and it has to be clear, so I try to keep it minimal.

I do store a lot in my Michael Kors bag. I got it from Estee Lauder last holiday, and will get another this year. So, here's the lipsticks I must have for work. I love them so much.

Starting at the top, Chanel mini glossimer, perfect for sparkle and sheer. It's less tacky than most glosses.  My Maybelline Baby Lips collection. My favorite is the peach, which is in the purple tube. That's the only thing I can wear and still kiss my boyfriend in. He never knows when I'm wearing it, but it keeps my lips super soft and moist. In the silver and clear tube is a cheap gloss. I got it at Target for $1. Then there are my Rouge Allure Chanel lipsticks. When we re-released this line, I became obsessed. The best reds I've ever seen. Then, I had to have the holiday matte (which we've literally had for 3 days now.) So in the Rouge Allure I have Passion, Incandescente, and L'Impatiente. Next is Loreal lip stain in Target red (of course I had to have TARGET red.) I have Lancome's retractable liners in Berry, Plum, and Garnet to match some different lipsticks. Then I have a Urban Decay gloss. For me, the highlight of the gloss is both memory and packaging. One of my dearest friends and I got these when I was in college. We had to have them because of the hologram on the wand. It's of a guy, fully dressed, but if you tilt it forward, he's in his underwear. So funny. Next is my FAVORITE product in the bag right now. It's the Nars velvet matte pencil in Cruella. Best lipstick ever. I love the color. It's a vibrant red, but with blue undertones, so it matches my cheeks. Finally I have 2 matte lipsticks from Lancome in Plum Show and Socialite. They match the liners and are fun mattes.

Anyway, there's my welcome back. Again. Next we'll do one of my real bags, plus my favorite make up techniques and products (both value and luxury), bust out my tool box, talk brushes, and anything else. I'm glad to be back.

JustFab Vs. ShoeDazzle

Alright ladies and gents, here's the first go around with purchasing from each company. I got each pair of shoes at 50% off, but I will say this: I called and asked both companies for help before purchasing, and I must say, ShoeDazzle's customer service is vastly superior to JustFab. JustFab could not answer any of my questions, nor would they say anything but "well, you can find out on the web site." ShoeDazzle was very helpful and helped me with everything, including walking me through checking out. Neither site charges for shipping, so that's nice. ShoeDazzle took a little longer to arrive, but both sites had easy links to track the shoes.

The websites are both easy, but here's a defining issue for me: ShoeDazzle offers shoes in half sizes all the way to 11. JustFab offers half sizes up to 8.5, but I'm a 9.5. So that's frustrating. I opted for the 10, and the shoes are too big. I am going to need to buy some inserts for the shoes, so they don't slide around too much.

So, let's talk presentation.

So, from left to right, here's what I got. JustFab came in today. They came in a flimsy little box, so they're more easily damaged. But they did have an awesome coupon. ShoeDazzle came in a thick box with a protective bag. I definitely like ShoeDazzle's presentation more. 

Now for the actual shoes. 

The ShoeDazzle ones are very basic, but they're exactly what I need for all my navy clothing. They're cotton, basic buckle, and a little cushion in the sole.

The details on the JustFab shoes are awesome. I love the little skull charm on the top strap. But my favorite detail is on the bottom of the shoe...

There's a little sailor skull. And it's cute and fun and a little surprise.

The ShoeDazzle shoes are slightly more comfortable, but I think that's because they're wedges. I'll let everyone know how they each wear. I do have to get those inserts. Hmmmm.

SS12 Trends 9- Blushes and Nudes

Probably one of the most diverse, yet flattering trends is the use of blush and beige tones. There are several different shades of blush or beige (aka nude tones) so it can look flattering on anyone. Please note that Tim Gunn once pointed out that using the term "nude" as a color is racist, and I kind of think that he's right. But, no matter how you refer to the color, it's something that anyone can wear, and it can be used for lots of different items. For instance, my first choice in this trend is...

This is my actual purse. Yes. I bought this at Target. It's an Xhiliration, it was inexpensive. I love it. So you can do that. You can always opt for an older trend,

The beige shoe is still fun, but classy. These are also mine, and they're about 5.5 inches high. So you always have those options. But for the more daring, the truly trendy, and the fashionista, try clothing. Because you can do it 1,000 different ways: dresses, tees, jackets, pants, shorts, in which ever shade flatters you the most:

But here's some tips. Make sure it's not the same shade as your skin. You will look naked. Make sure it's not too different from your skin tone- it will wash you out. Other than that, have fun with it! It works with anything, black, white, neons, patterns, pastels, ANYTHING. That's what makes it amazing. 

SS12 Trend #10- Neon Bags

Once again, we've moved into the area of things I love the neon bag. And to be honest, it's something that can go with anything. So, here's the deal, don't spend a lot of money on the bag, unless you make a lot of money. Go to The Gap, Target, J. Crew, Forever 21, or H&M and grab one for cheap. And here's some cute ones. I don't think we need more info than that.

SS12 Trends #11, Baseball Caps

Sorry about the hiatus. I had to get through some things. Some very emotional things. It's been hard dealing with remaining in Denver. I feel very stagnant. And that's not something I like.

BUT! On to more important things. We are now getting into things I love. One of the things I had to have this year was a baseball cap. There's so many different kinds, and anyone can wear one. I opted for a large, flat-brimmed Yankees cap in gray. If you're not into sports, it's cool, you have options. they make blank ones, you can do your dad's favorite team, the team you grew up liking, or a classic team, like the Yankees, Giants, Clippers, Lakers, Celtics, Bruins, Red Wings, etc. They're fun and sporty, but they can be feminine.  Here's a great example.

So give it a try. find one you're comfortable in. And if you're pinching pennies, steal one from your boyfriend, dad, brother, whatever.

SS12 Trends #12 The Wedge/Platform Sneaker

The wedge sneaker... AHHHH yes, when it's done right, they're fantastic. But it's not so easy to do right. When done right, it looks a little street, but still fun and fashionable. When it's done wrong, it's a hot mess.

This trend is comfortable, but funky, young, fresh, and fun. It's easy to see Vivian Westwood running around in them. Getting them in multicolored can be great, but someone a little more conservative can wear a cream or a gray pair.

When they look like this, they're worse than those ones the Spice Girls used to wear.

When in doubt, try more of a wedge, because they'll still look chic and urban. The platform is too round, and can look heavy. Wear them with leggings or tights, skinny jeans, boyfriend jeans, or voluminous skirts. They add something unexpected to a classic look, or they add pop to street style.

This is definitely a trend that comes and goes, so these are not investment pieces, but they are fun and trendy, and they will always come back into style.

SS12 Trends #13 Florals

Every once and a while, a floral print is used well, but more often than not it looks like this. And it's vomit-worthy. The use of floral prints makes me think of my grandmother's couch and curtains. And no offense to Grandma, but that was never the best look.

If you really want to wear florals, remember mix it with neutrals, keep it pretty and feminine, and try and watch the colors. If it's too bright you will look like an Easter character. If it's too faded, it will not look vintage. It will look old. And, most importantly, if you can afford it, do it right. Dolce and Gabbana style.

Top Trends for SS12. #14

Really? This is something that's cool? I could maybe, MAYBE tolerate the middle set, because the vertical stripes make legs longer. But overwhelmingly, printed skinny jeans are just going to make your butt look big. Even acid wash is terrible. 

Do you really want to look like one of the guys from LMFAO? So, this is up there with my hatred of animal sweaters as the most tragic trends for 2012. Stop yourself before you buy.

15 Spring/Summer Trends #15

This is not a flattering look. You have a dog on your chest. 

This is my least favorite trend for SS12. It's awkward and uncomfortable and really ugly. It's a nod to Glee's Rachel, who insists on wearing these beastly sweaters. There isn't anything about this trend I think of as flattering. The sweaters look like something for a small child, and not in  an adorable way, like a tutu. Instead there's a picture of an animal. It's not cute. It's tacky and something I'm pretty sure I wore during the early 90's. It's basically one step above a holiday sweater. And not even the rich can pull those off.
